Boy: the abyss, music & lighting

Today we are finishing watching Boy (for the second time for most of us!).  Then we are going to focus on the darkest part of the film (the abyss), and think about the role of music.

1. Boy is watching his Dad outside the pub from the car.  Describe what he sees in his head as he watches at first.

2. Then reality kicks in and Michael Jackson disappears.  What does Boy see happen?

3. Have you heard of the term "rose coloured glasses"?  Look it up and see what it means.  Write your own definition.

4. What is the name of the song playing in the car after the pub?  Why do you think they used that song?

5. Think of a time when you had a great start to the day and then it went wrong.  Describe it in a doc in your English folder.  What music would you use for each part of the day, and why would you use that music?

Lighting is used to develop the atmosphere of a film.

- the scariest scenes, and the scenes without hope, tend to be in darkness - either at night or in shadow.

- the happiest scenes, and those with lots of hope and promise, tend to be in the daytime or in warm light.  Warm light has a yellow tinge to it, but cool light has a bluish tinge to it.

Describe the lighting in the car scene just before Leaf is killed.

Extension activity:

Boy realises outside the pub the impact of his decision to show his dad where the marijuana is.

Describe what lead Boy to taking his Dad to the marijuana.

Explain what Boy learns from the experience.

The hero's journey and Boy

Starter today: what do you think of this painting, called The Hero's Journey?

For more information, have a look at what artist Sofia Minson has to say about her painting.

Today we are going to look at the Hero's cycle and how it relates to the film Boy.

Our task today is to make a map of what happens in Boy, and relate it to the hero's journey.
By the end of the double lesson, we want to be able to explain the hero's journey, and how it links to Boy.

Another word that could be useful for us today is anti-hero.  An anti-hero is a main character who lacks courage, or morality.  Who do you think shows the most courage in Boy?  Who do you think shows the least courage in Boy?

Rocky, Boy & the child-dad

Today we are watching the film together.  For those of you who feel confident in your knowledge of the film, I have some learning activities for you to work on.

Rocky & Boy

One of the ways that Waititi develops the character of Boy is by setting up a contrast between the two boys.

1. What happened when Rocky was born?

2. Why do you think Rocky feels guilty about being born?  Do you think you he should feel guilty?

3. Boy is a lot more enthusiastic about his Dad than Rocky is.  Find an example of this from the film and describe it in your own words.

The child-dad

1. We hear Alamein/Dad/Shogun on the phone to his Mum.  What does he say that sounds like he is one of the kids?

2. When Alamein/Dad/Shogun asks Boy to stop calling him Dad, what message does this give to Boy?

3. At the party, there is a dream-like sequence.  Who does Boy see his dad as being like?
